A big thank you to Tanya from T B Photography for supplying this insight of exactly what is involved in supplying you with memories that will be in print/video for a lifetime.
Every couple wants photographs and video to remember their special wedding day! Or should I say every couple wants QUALITY photographs and video to remember their special day.
If Quality is what they are looking for home videos and poor quality photographs on a camera phone won’t cut it. This is why couples should opt for a professional wedding photographer to document their special day. However, questions that are always asked are “Why, as soon as I mention the word Wedding does the price go up?” and “Why is Wedding Photography so Expensive?”
“Why, as soon as I mention the word Wedding does the price go up?”
Some may say this is the case with quite a number of wedding vendors, however not so with the photography or videography.
Professional photographers have their set prices for all their photographic specialties though not all of these areas can take up a whole day. Some wedding packages do and not only just on the day, photographers work is carried on for days after to ensure a couples photographs and video are perfect.
Your wedding photographer is so much more than just that! We spend the whole day with our couples, from start to finish, we are coordinators, time keepers, peace makers and having experienced plenty of weddings we can come up with solutions to the problems that inevitably happen throughout the course of the day.
“Why is Wedding Photography so Expensive?”
It’s only expensive if you think so, but let’s try and explain the value of what you are paying for, and what is involved.
It goes without saying that weddings can be a very costly affair. The tab just keeps getting higher and higher from the venue to the decorations and invitations. Yes photographers and videographers are a large chunk of that, but why are the prices for these services more than other items and more than most want to pay?
Prices charged by wedding photographer’s ranges greatly from where they are from, style, experience and quality. However they are a necessary part of any wedding day! Are you willing to risk not having amazing photographs of your dream wedding?
The most important part of picking your Wedding photographer is the “click” and no I don’t mean the click of the camera button, I mean the click between you and the people that are going to spend all day with you, capturing your shots and your personality.
Your wedding photographer actually needs to have people skills, be able to communicate, make people comfortable in front of the camera – OH!!! and don’t forget the ability to pose people! knowing how to make people look their best, yet completely natural in a photograph is a skill all by itself.
Many wedding photographers offer full day of shooting which goes from the start of the bridal make-up and hair right through to the last person leaving the wedding reception. Though… a photographers work does not stop there! They not only spend sometimes 16 hours of the day taking wedding photographs/video but then then go home, upload the photos, pick out which ones are to go on social media the next day as sneak peek. You then have the editing process, depending on the style of editing some photos can take from 3 to 30 minutes each (and speaking for ourselves, we can sometimes take up to 3000 photos during a 16 hour day). I will let you do the maths on that one. You can also add photoshop to the equation as well, a photo can go from being good to great by removing objects that most people would not necessarily even take note of. When you go to a wedding next take note of how many of the vendors are there for the whole day, I think you will find the photographer/videographer are the only ones apart from a planner.
The equipment that is required on a wedding day by a professional wedding photographer/videographer is extensive and expensive! Some of the items range from high-end lenses and camera bodies, numerous types of batteries, lights, tripods to quality fast memory cards.
Not to mention the equipment that is needed to carry out the editing and delivery process of the images and films. Fast high-end computers or laptops and the software that aids the editing process.
Then you come down to the day to day cost of a Photography company such as:
* Education – This is how we capture the perfect shots for you! I wished it was as easy as waking up one morning and just knowing exactly what to do when photographing a wedding day.
* Insurance – Most venues will not allow wedding photographers to work without insurance.
* Web site – Without this it limits a photographer’s way of marketing themselves.
* Advertising – How wold you find the perfect wedding photographer if they were not advertising?
Bottom line is if you reduced the budget on your cake and cut a few corners, hardly anyone would know and they certainly won’t remember, after a week your cake will be gone, however if you pick the right photographer and videographer, you will have wedding photos and video telling a beautiful story and holding lots of amazing memories. These you will have forever…
We hope that those who have taken the time to read this page will have a better understanding of why professional photographs cost so much more than the ones you will get your “friend” or “family member” to take. Shooting professional wedding photography is a skill. A skill that is mastered through experience, so keep all this in mind when you are looking for the right person/s to capture your special day!
